A very limited, very cool 1.5 Litre magnum from the Cloudy Bay cellars down in Marlborough. This is a 2014 vintage bottle of their world class Pinot, cellar aged and now released ready to be busted out for a very special occasion for the die hard Pinot lover wanting to make an impression.
Normal recommended cellaring potential on a standard 750ml bottle of this Pinot would be around 10 years – you could comfortable add another 5+ years on to that as wine has much greater aging potential in larger format sizes.
We all know how people fall over themselves to get a bottle of their Sauvy but Cloudy Bay’s increased focus on their Pinot, the only red in their range, is the one catching the eye these days.
In true winemaker waffle, this is described having “all the structural interest of 2010, with an unprecedented freshness and varietal lift. A wide array of red berry and cherry flavours, true to classic Pinot Noir.” We just thought this was a Pinot with class, power and elegance, a bit like an iron fist in a velvet glove.
And what to serve? Duck. Rich, fatty, glorious duck!

Damn, you're looking young for your age!
