Head of the family, leader of the tribe, the big MacDaddy, call him what you will but Babich Wines wouldn’t be around if it wasn’t for Josip Babich.
Croat born Josip moved to NZ in 1910 and by 1916 he was selling the first Babich wine (labelled “Babich Brothers”). Almost 100 years on and the Babich name is still going strong.
The modern day Babich bunch have dedicated their flagship label to Josip and called it their “Patriarch”. This is a label only released in the very best of vintages, from low yielding vines for maximum quality, entirely hand-picked fruit from their “Irongate” Gimblett Gravels vineyard, hand plunged, the works.
From a stunning 2016 Hawke’s Bay vintage, this blend of 40% Merlot, 33% Malbec and 27% Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, rich red that has some serious cellaring potential of around 15 years or so!
Awarded a whopping 96/100 by The Real Review’s Huon Hooke, who said “The wine is elegantly full-bodied, finely-structured and subtly powerful. There’s masses of tannin and lots of extract. Touches of cassis and herbs. The tannins dominate the back-palate and finish. An impressive wine which demands time.”
